Math:
In the sixth grade curriculum, which uses the Eureka Math series, students will make the transition from elementary to middle level thinking and learning. The math at this level will be driven by the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Content and Practice. The Common Core Initiative is a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices.
There will be 6 Modules in the series. Each module is printed and will be given to students to put in their binder. As we complete a module, it will be removed and stored at home. The next module will be put in the binder. The lessons, most practice problems, and exercises are in the module. A separate, composition notebook will be used for extra notes and work. The 6 modules are:
1. Ratios and Unit Rates
2. Arithmetic Operations Including Division of Fractions
3. Rational Numbers
4. Expressions and Equations
5. Area, Surface Area, and Volume
6. Statistics
The 8 Standards for Mathematical Practice include:
- Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
- Reason abstractly & quantitatively.
- Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
- Model with mathematics.
- Use appropriate tools strategically.
- Attend to precision.
- Look for and make use of structure.
- Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
